This landmark building –– often referred to as the most beautiful building in El Cerrito, California's East Bay area –– was scheduled to be demolished in the spring 2003. Vital Building & Enterprises, Inc. agreed to work with the developers, who purchased the old mill site, in order to relocate the historical building to the site being developed by our firm. The site is directly across the street, making the project feasible.
The former El Cerrito Mill & Lumber building, renamed The Vital Building, was completed in spring 2003. The actual building move occurred on Sept. 15, 2002 throughout the early morning, starting from 2 a.m. and ending approximately 7 a.m.
The building has two retail spaces, one about 2,900 square feet, the other nearly 1,750 square feet. The upstairs contains 10 professional office suites. There are 18 parking spaces in the rear parking lot. This project received a lot of media attention from local newspapers.
We also made it into the Images of America El Cerrito History book, printed 2005. We were one of last entries in the book. I’d recommend getting the book, especially if you have been in El Cerrito, or have family that has been here, as I have, for a while.
